The Journey from Idea to Commercialized Protein-Based Adhesives
Humble Beginnings
15 years ago, Hans Edelmann, a leader in the wood industry, discovered a book on traditional carpentry and was inspired to use natural proteins for gluing for adhesives in the wood-based industry.
Formulating the Vision
Hans foresaw the need for a formaldehyde-free and completely fossil-free adhesive, so–driven by his vision–he started a garage lab, experimenting with proteins and filing the first patent.
The Path to Commercialization
A major wood board and furniture producer took interest in Hans' idea, prompting the need for investment partners.
In 2016, private investors in Poland helped Sestec move into a new lab and production hall in Trzebinia, near Kraków.
Building a Dedicated Team
Talented chemists, including Anna Sieranc, joined Hans’ team. Anna became the head of research and application, leading the team to secure 3 patents and conduct hundreds of customer trials to refine formulations.
Achieving Industry Leadership
Today, Sestec stands as a leading producer of protein-based, fossil-free adhesives for MDF and particleboards. Hans still visits Trzebinia to discuss developments with Anna and her team, reflecting the journey from a garage laboratory to industry-leading innovation.
